Charles Schneider ‘Groseilles’ Art Deco Vase
This colourful Art Deco vase by Charles Schneider, executed in the ‘Groseilles’ (redcurrants) décor, is a striking example of French Art Deco glass from the 1920s. It was created at Schneider’s renowned glassworks in Épinay-sur-Seine, France, where bold colours and stylised natural motifs became characteristic features of his work.
The ‘Groseilles’ Décor
The vase has an elegant, elongated ovoid body supported by an applied dark-purple glass foot. A vibrant, marbled yellow ground dominates the composition and provides a vivid backdrop for large clusters of stylised redcurrants.
Dark accents and finely engraved details define the individual berries. Above them, sinuous glass trails in shades of green and brown form stylised branches from which the fruit appears to hang. Meanwhile, the upper section gradually transitions from yellow into deep red glass. The dark-purple foot creates a striking contrast with the intense yellow and red tones of the body.
Schneider’s Glassmaking Technique
Rather than being simply painted onto the surface, the Groseilles decoration is created from different colours of glass incorporated into and applied onto the hot glass during production. As a result, the decoration has a remarkable sense of depth and movement.
This sophisticated technique creates the combination of vibrant colours, soft contours and painterly effects for which Charles Schneider glass is particularly admired.
From Art Nouveau to Art Deco
The highly stylised redcurrants also illustrate the transition from the naturalistic vocabulary of Art Nouveau to the bolder and increasingly abstract aesthetic of Art Deco. Although nature remains the inspiration, Schneider transforms the botanical motif into monumental shapes, strong colour contrasts and a distinctly modern decorative composition.
Consequently, the vase combines the organic inspiration of Art Nouveau with the expressive colour and stylisation that would become hallmarks of Schneider’s Art Deco glass.
The foot is engraved with the signature ‘Schneider’.
